I got to know Ana during the recruitment procedure for my successor as the scientific manager of the Jena School for Microbial communication. She stood out as a very strong candidate from the start, was shortlisted, invited to the interview and was finally offered the position. Ana brought exactly the right combination of scientific expertise, organisational know-how and a personable as well as empathetic approach to management. Unfortunately, Ana had to turn down the job offer owing to a change in her private situation that no longer made it feasible for her to relocate to Germany. I applaud her for her wisdom to prioritise her family life and am certain her combination of skills and her warm personality will see her succeed professionally. She is clearly committed to making an impact through applying science to the betterment of all mankind and I look forward to wittnessing her successes in the future. I have a feeling our paths will cross again and I look forward to when they do!
